Eco-friendly Choices for Dog Owners

When deciding to add a new four legged friend to your family, head down to your local animal shelter to find one who needs a fur-ever home instead of going to a pet store or a breeder. Not only will you help to reduce the huge problem of homeless dogs (or cats), but this will also have an impact on the environment.

Ensuring your pets are desexed helps to control the growing population of dogs and cats and prevents more of them ending up unwanted in shelters.

Last year we spent in excess of $12 billion on our pets and as dog owners who love spoiling our canine companions, we are all contributing to the problem by spending huge amounts on products that are unnecessary and often not environmentally-friendly. When it comes to dog accessories, we were surprised find few greener options available in the Australian market compared to the UK or USA so it seems that we have a bit of catching up to do...

Switching to purchasing biodegradable dog products that are made from recycled or sustainable materials is a small step in the right direction and changing our habits may encourage manufacturers to offer us more environmentally friendly choices in the future.

Ahoy there! This Sea Star inspired dog toy is quirky, unique and made from 100% natural New Zealand wool. It will add a nautical theme to every collection. Designed to be a fun, throw and fetch cuddly toy but it is not designed as a chew toy.

The Sea Star is approximately 21cm across from tip to tip. Available in Sand, Mint, Orange, Charcoal, Red and Turquoise.

RRP: $14.00 from www.eastcoastpets.com.au

The biggest household expense when it comes to our dogs is by far our dog food. In our opinion, the best (and most economical) thing to do is to buy in bulk (which reduces the amount of energy and packaging that goes into making the product) but also choose the largest packaging possible. Whether you're driving to a pet store or have the food delivered to your home, this simple change will benefit the environment!

The vision driving Australian brand Frontier Pets is to end factory farming by encouraging more people to buy dog food from ethical producers. Using only 100% high welfare ingredients, this range of raw freeze-dried dog food is gluten-free, low in carbohydrates and uses only all natural, real ingredients.

This includes grass-fed free-range beef, free-range chicken and ethically farmed pork plus organic fruit and vegetables and free-range eggs. 1kg of Frontier Pet Food will reconstitute to 4kg, making it also extremely good value for money.

Camping with Dogs - Safety Tips & Essentials

Spring has arrived spelling long week-ends and a school holiday break around the corner, always a popular time for a family camping trip! However if you're planning to take along your canine friend(s), PETstock resident vet Dr Rod Sharpin urges you to be prepared.

The first step is to ensure you check your dog's microchipping and ID tag details are up-to-date.
Make sure your pet is current on all recommended vaccinations (take records with you) as well as flea, tick, and heartworm medication(s).

"Unfamiliar surroundings increase the risk of your dog getting injured whether bitten by a snake, an insect (ticks love dense bush and long grass) or eating a poisonous substance."Maybe consider the benefits taking out of pet insurance before your travel. A recent survey of 905 pet parents about their largest vet bill found that the average was $1649, with two respondents quoting figures in excess of $12,000! comments Dr. Sharpin.

Ensure your dog avoids drinking stagnant water or saltwater is important as is keeping them away from toxic plantsHazards such as fish hooks, kebab sticks and firelighters are also dangerous so always make sure these items are stored of disposed of carefully.

There's nothing like cuddling up with your pal in front of a roaring fire, but keep your dog far enough from the flames that he doesn't get burnt by a random spark and position yourselves upwind from the smoke!"

Basically, think of your dog as a kid. They need you to feed them and provide water for them as well as proper shelter overnight.Consider packing a few essential items so that your canine bestie is safe and has all the creature comforts required to enjoy their trip away from home. There's no need to "ruff" it!
