The Poochette Dog Walking Pouch - Review

The Poochette is a new lightweight, neoprene dog walking pouch which discreetly stores used dog poo bags in its insulated compartment until a bin can be found.

A BIT OF HISTORY...

We first came upon this innovation by Wag and Me at the 2016 Melbourne Dog Lovers Show where we had a quick chat with founder, Danni. Like so many new pet entrepreneurs, this small family-owned business came about to solve a problem she had in common with many dog lovers…

How do you keep enjoying your walk after Fido’s done his smelly business and left you dangling a bag of smelly dog waste until you either get back home or find a conveniently positioned bin where you can drop the unsightly bag?

Wag and Me conducted extensive research with dog owners which confirmed that there was both a need and want in the market for such a convenient and multi-purpose accessory as the Poochette. Fast forward to Spring 2017 and after many prototypes and improvements to their original concept, the unique Poochette is now ready to hit the Australian market.

HOW DO YOU USE THE POOCHETTE?

Porthos could also easily carry the Poochette himself!
The Poochette is a multi-purpose squarish dog walking pouch rather than a dog walking bag because of its compact dimensions (17 cm high x 17cm wide x 5cm deep).

It provides lots of storage compartments though its primary function is to both dispense dog waste bags (easily accessed from the front) and dispose of your dog waste by hiding it within the insulated compartment (reducing smells) so that you can enjoy your walk!
The main advantage compared to other dog walking bags  is that the Poochette converts to a sporty shoulder strap.

The clips on either end of the lead allow you to tether your dog to a pole or fence if necessary – e.g. when you need to pick up your dog’s waste or you may want to sit down at the local park or beach to relax for a while but your dog may not have the perfect recall!

This will also give you peace of mind… The exclusively designed carabiners (at both ends) allow you to attach the Poochette to most leads (with the exception of retractable leashes).

Even if you’re not using it as your dog walking leash, it’s always good to have a back-up.

One good example is if an off-leash dog comes towards you with their owner nowhere in sight, you can temporarily tether that dog (if  safe) so that both him and yours remain out of trouble.

The pouch is so nicely designed that no one would ever suspect what’s hiding inside. People will think it’s a cute casual walking bag…

WHAT WE REALLY LIKED

We love the Poochette’s design, its light weight, the bright and cheerful cherry red colour and the
compact size  - we found that dog walking bags are a lot like handbags: the bigger they are, the more you try to fit in!

In addition t
o the insulated dog waste compartment, there are another three. The expandable mesh pocket at the back is a good place to store your mobile phone: this allows easy access if you're into taking happy snaps during your walks or you could fit a tennis ball if you’re heading to the dog park. There's another zippered pocket behind it perfect to carry a (small) purse/wallet and keys.

Another option is to use the other large pocket at the front which sits underneath the flap ensuring your phone or wallet are fully protected from prying eyes and the elements.

Last but not least, the lead can come off completely so you can then attach the bag around your normal belt loops to create an insulated treat bag.

WHAT WE LIKED LESS...

We were slightly disappointed that the Poochette did not come pre-loaded with its own dog waste bags, ready-for-use in the front pocket.

However there are many brands of biodegradable dog waste bags so buy in bulk to save time and money and keep your pouch filled!

If you’re in the habit of carrying a small bottle of water and a collapsible bowl on your walks, the compact size makes these harder to fit as the main insulated compartment is really designed to only carry your dog waste and we wouldn’t put anything else in there! Again, you could use the expandable mesh pocket at the back for this but it's not ideal.

OUR VERDICT

Wag and Me have created an environmentally friendly and versatile solution towards encouraging more dog walkers to pick up after their dog!

We would use the Poochette for a short walk or popping to our local shop, when we only take the basics with us like keys, a mobile phone and some loose change.

If you're heading for a longer hike where you need to take your wallet, a bottle of water/bowl, maybe a bag of treats for rewards etc. it is hard to fit it all in!

The Poochette is currently available in 3 colours: Red, Blue and Black.

Joseph Lyddy Easy Wash - Review

Bathing three Belgian Shepherds has always been a major hassle: not because it takes a bit of time, they leave our bathtub full of scratches and we end up with a pile of soggy towels…

No, they’re simply very reluctant participants and see no redeeming features in being clean: one puts on the brakes and suddenly weighs a ton whilst the other escapes to the backyard as soon he hears the sound of the running tap!

Conner's first bath: not a fan then, not a fan now!
Drying is a cinch even in winter with our short-coated Malinois, as they quickly shake off the excess water and then pace the deck in the sun, eagerly waiting to be let back in!

However washing our double-coated Tervueren during the winter months is an ordeal. It takes him forever to dry and the look of pain on his face when water touches him has always been priceless!

Taking them to our local dog wash is not an option: the closest is a fair way away and our pack is likely to be just as uncooperative and embarrassing!

Thankfully we recently woke up to the fact that there are some dry shampoos which allow you to get your dogs clean and smelling fresh in no time whilst avoiding all the drama!

JOSEPH LYDDY PET INDULGENCE - EASY WASH DRY SHAMPOOS

Joseph Lyddy is an Australian manufacturer of pet grooming products including shampoos, conditioners and detanglers but they also offer dog accessories (collars, leads and bowls) as well as dental treats and joint care chews.

"No water?" OMG, this is amazing!" says Porthos
When the company suggested we trial their Easy Wash dry shampoos (part of the Pet Indulgence line) we were eager to accept and try anything that would make our collective bath experience less painful!

We had a choice of three ‘fragrances’ which all sounded equally appealing:
  • Blood Orange & Cinnamon Bark
  • Vanilla, Honey & Coconut
  • Pomegranate, Lime & Lavender
All varieties contain only natural ingredients and are pH balanced and paraben free. They come in spray cans (200g) which should last you a long time.

WHAT IS A DRY SHAMPOO AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

It is a convenient and quick way to give your dog a clean-up without water. This means you don’t need to drag them to the bathroom or organise a tub and hose outside, and best of all you don’t have to deal with a soaking wet dog, as we usually end up just as wet! Dry shampoos are a great solution for in-between regular baths or when your dog needs a quick freshen-up for visitors or a trip to the vet!

We are told that the Easy Wash range is also suitable for cats, who are possibly even less fond of water than our dogs!

We decided to allocate one fragrance per dog in an attempt to choose our favourite at the end of our grooming session.

I don’t know if Porthos understood this was his 'get out of jail card' and an alternative to being put in the bathtub but he could not shake the grin off his face!

We gave him a couple of quick squirts on with the Blood Orange & Cinnamon Bark

Past the first moment of surprise, he settled in very well and thoroughly enjoyed the brushing process – we still use our old Kong Zoom Groom bought ten years ago, which always removes a huge amount of loose hair on all our dogs at bath time.

Once our one-on-one grooming session was over, I could definitely smell the citrus on him but that cinnamon bark remained elusive…

Next in line was his sister Aramis and we thought the Vanilla, Honey & Coconut would be a bit more girly and appropriate for her! Again the first sprays came as a surprise to her - though we made sure we were not too close - but she decided that being the centre of attention was fun after all and ended up rolling on her back! Not so practical for a thorough refresh but at least she was relaxed! Smelling her coat afterwards, this fragrance was definitely our favourite out of the three we tried.

All our dogs had a proper bath in the three weeks prior so they were not very dirty to start with. So i
f your dog decides to jump into mud puddles or to roll in something “unmentionable”, I’d still head for the bathroom for a thorough soak and scrub!

WHAT WE LIKE

There is no need to dry off your dog as the spray does not leave any greasy residues. The shampoo sinks into your dog's coat beautifully so you could really use it anywhere even in the middle of your living room if it weren't for all the loose hair if you're brushing…

We were able to give our three dogs a quick refresh in under 15 minutes with no mess whilst keeping them happy throughout the process so this is one grooming session for the record books!

The only negative is that the Easy Wash dry shampoos come in pressurised dispensers. They are therefore extremely flammable and must be kept in a cool place and away from direct sunlight. Don’t leave them in your car or exposed to temperatures over 50°C.

Echo Pet Foods Dog Treats - Review

Good dogs deserve good treats! Treats that are not only great tasting, but wholesome and healthy.

Echo Pet Foods
is an Australian owned family business, which was founded in 2013 as a response to the lack of healthy treat options available for pets. The owners were tired of being offered treats made from cheap meat alternatives full of preservatives and additives.
They decided to create their own range, which was named in remembrance
of their beautiful Siberian Husky, Echo.

The company's vows to deliver the highest quality pet food using free range and non-GMO ingredients as part of a healthy balanced diet, providing the ultimate nutrition for your pets.

Echo Pet Foods currently supply fresh produce and dehydrated treats for dogs and cats with meals coming soon! The entire range is made from human grade 100% free range (no antibiotics and no GMO) hormone-free grass-fed beef, lamb and wild caught kangaroo.

ECHO PET FOODS - TREATS RANGE

Beef Topside Jerky - Lamb Loin Jerky - Kangaroo Rump Jerky - Beef Liver Treats (from Left to Right)

There is a diverse range of treats on offer from Lamb, Beef, Kangaroo, Seafood  but for the purpose of this review, we only sampled the first three.

#1. Beef Treats

Fresh lean beef is rich in vitamins and minerals, especially iron and zinc, and is therefore recommended as part of a healthy diet. Other crucial vitamins and minerals that can be found within beef include vitamin B12, selenium, niacin, vitamin B6, and phosphorous.

Topside Jerky dog treats are made from 100% human grade Australian Topside Beef, dehydrated and packed locally. They're ideal as a reward or training aid. These treats are suitable for puppies to old dogs whilst still satisfying all dogs in between!
You could also choose from Beef Crumbles or the Liver Treats which were definitely our dogs' favourites!

#2. Lamb Treats

Lamb treats in the Echo Pet Foods range are made from 100% human grade Australian Lamb Loin free from additives or preservatives.

You can choose from Lamb Chews, Liver Treats or Loin Jerky and all of them work as an occasional treat or for training purposes. These are especially recommended if you have a fussy pet.

Lamb treats can be a little fatty so a little goes a long way but liver treats can be easily broken into small pieces.

RRP: $4.99 for 100g (also 400g or 1kg value pack)

#3. Kangaroo Treats (Rump Jerky)

Kangaroo is great for dogs that have food allergies along with being the perfect training reward or entertainment chew.

Made with wild caught 100% kangaroo rump, these treats contain no preservatives, colourings or artificial flavours.

RRP: $6.99 (100g pack)

There's also an impressive range of Fish Treats (Queenfish pieces, Mackerel Tails, Fish Bites, Cartilage Sticks, Fish Nuggets, Flake Jerky, Fish Twisters, Pilchards) that would delight any dog or cat!

If meat is off the menu, a Vegetarian offering is also on the cards in the near future...

WHAT WE LIKE

As we all try to do our bit to reduce our "carbon paw-print", an easy step to take is to purchase more locally made products that also support our local economy. It makes very little sense for us to us to go and purchase an overseas equivalent that ends up costing twice as much!

There's no doubt that the health and wellbeing of our pets are at the core of Echo Pet Foods' values, well ahead of their profits and in this day and age, we found this refreshing!

Based on the quality of the ingredients (free-range, grass-fed, wild caught), the pricing is extremely competitive as I don't think we've come across any treats of this quality starting from $4.99 per 100g.

Our dogs kept a very close eye on the samples during the photo shoot and once given the signal, Porthos was ready to pounce (in case it moved...) on his reward!

Doggie Delivery Dog Subscription Box - Review

Two years ago, we were totally unaware of the concept of dog subscription boxes. Fast forward to 2017 and they're everywhere! With increased competition in this market segment, providers certainly have to offer something new and different to grab the attention of dog lovers these days...

INTRODUCING DOGGIE DELIVERY...

The latest entrant in the Australian market is called Doggie Delivery. Its founders always struggled to find treats and toys that they felt were suitable for their beloved Pug, Ralphie.

As health and eco-conscious pet parents, they were frustrated when most stores would only stock cheap imported products and the creation of Doggie Delivery was their answer to this frustration...

Ralphie's humans are also passionate about supporting other Australian small businesses and independent artisans and guarantee 100% of all their products will be sourced locally which does get our tick of approval!

Every Doggie Delivery features a unique collection of the best dog toys, healthy treats, accessories and hygiene products that Australia has to offer! Knowing that every dog is different, the company strives to provide suitable deliveries for the heavy chewers, the meek and gentle and the fussy foodies.

Each monthly box will contain 6 to 8 premium products.
The motivation behind Doggie Delivery was also to make a difference to the lives of those dogs less fortunate and the company has pledged to donate 5% of all their profits directly to Australian shelter charities.

Every month, customers will have the opportunity to suggest the charities they feel would benefit most from this support.

WHAT WAS IN OUR DOGGIE DELIVERY BOX THIS MONTH?

Whether you're incredibly busy or simply don’t live close to a pet store, a subscription box is a great way of ensuring your pooch has a fresh supply of dog toys and treats every month without spending hours online as all the hard work has been done for you...

We all love surprises and our dogs do too! We love the fact that these boxes introduce dog owners like ourselves to new brands and ranges that you would never find in your average pet shop!

It always feels a little bit like Christmas when you have no idea what’s in the box. However, one quick look at our three dogs sniffing the contents with intent confirmed that there were definitely some dog treats in this mix!

First up were some 100% natural Australian Lamb Liver treats from Melbourne-based Laila and Me. With 3 large dogs, we never have too many training rewards and these snap easily into small chunks, perfect for the training pouch!

The Max's Minty Fresh treats from Laura's Pawesome Treats were completely new to us.

This generously sized 200g pack included 10 large treats (7 paws and 3 dog bones) using 100% natural peanut butter blended with parsley, mint and chlorophyll, ideal as a morning treat or as a breath freshener after a meal or whenever your dog can sneak one in, including halfway through a photo shoot!
With one dog having recently explored our compost pile, these arrived at an opportune time!

We also received a small sample of Frank and Pop's all natural gourmet dog biscuits (2 small paws and 2 bones) which were inhaled by our pack...

Finally, our September box included three separate dog toys: two plush toys, including a very cute Ollie Owl Patchwork Pal from Gummi Pet Products which makes a very convincing chicken sound when you shake or squeeze it. Having live chickens in our backyard, let's just hope our dogs never attempt to replicate those squeaky sounds...
It is an adorable toy but may not last too long with our hell-raising Malinois team...

We really liked the look and feel of the eco-friendly red Sea Star dog toy from East Coast Pets, handmade in Nepal using 100% wool and vegetable dyes and completely biodegradable. Not being a chew toy, it is again not ideal for our large dogs but it certainly made Porthos feel very nautical!

Last but not least there was a large bone-shaped Chew Toy from HiHo Australia which is durable, non-toxic and is deemed to improve dental health

Our box also featured a cute little bow-tie proudly made by Ralphie's mum and it took us a couple of days to realise its design featured a fox head. This will provide another opportunity to play dress-up down the track!

HOW DOES THE DOGGIE DELIVERY SUBSCRIPTION BOX WORK?

Step 1
– you will need to complete your pet profile on their website. To ensure the toys and treats are suited to your pet, you can select from 3 dog sizes (0-10kg, 10-25kg and 25kg+).

Step 2
– simply choose the length of your plan. Opt for a one-off box as a special present or to trial the service or sign up for a 3 or 6-month subscription to take advantage of the plan discounts.

Step 3 – Keep an eye out on your front door after the 15th of each month when all boxes are being shipped to subscribers! If you work from home, your dogs will definitely alert you when it arrives...

Please note that you need to order (or subscribe) before the last day of the month to be in the run for a shipment the following month… As soon as your box has been despatched, you will receive an email with the relevant details so that you can track the progress of your shipment!
"Mum, you shouldn't have... Is this all really for me?"

EzyDog Summit Backpack for Dogs - Review

Aramis Malinois wears EzyDog Summit Dog Backpack - turning her head left
As we decided to hit the local trails with our dogs this Spring, what better time to trial the EzyDog Summit Backpack?

With its rugged look and practical design we thought this dog gear would give us the extra incentive to go out and explore more. Being of similar size and built, our Malinois could even share the load with one carrying the backpack on the way in and the other one on the way out!

WHAT ARE THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE SUMMIT BACKPACK?

We have used EzyDog's award winning EVA Chest Plate Harness – which forms to our dog’s chest for a secure and custom fit - with our dogs for 3 years now and it is still our preferred harness for longer walks.

EzyDog Summit Backpack for Dogs - Using the Leash Caddy
The EzyDog Summit Backpack combines the chest plate with a double-sided pack, which offers two large waterproof compartments as well as two outer pockets for easy access.

This backpack is made from a super-tough RipStop fabric with a breathable mesh on the inside for comfort against your dog. As it can get hot pretty quickly where we live, this is an essential feature and we found that our dog Aramis was more than happy to carry her (light) load for a couple of hours without getting sweaty.

As I'd never put anything on her back before, I was half expecting our strong-willed girl to shake it off but she took to wearing her own pack with surprising ease.
It certainly did not restrict her movements or deter her in her bush explorations!
Aramis walks towards camera wearing EzyDog Summit Dog Backpack
The Summit Backpack has a convenient grab handle on the top of the spine for when you need extra control over your dog. Having a reactive dog, this comes in extremely handy when we encounter other walkers with a dog during our hikes.

On the back of the handle, there is also a D-Ring which we used to clip our leash to on our walks.

If your dog has the 'perfect recall' and is allowed to roam free during your walks, the Leash Caddy will hold your dog lead until you’re ready to resume control!

The Summit Backpack also features reflective trims for increased visibility in low light conditions.

WHAT WE LIKE

The Medium Summit Backpack is a neat compact size for our 30kg dog with the roomy compartments providing more than enough capacity for a day hike. We did easily fit a couple of small water bottles, a collapsible bowl, extra poop bags, treats etc. with plenty of space left.

The sizing is quite generous so our advice is to select your size based on the girth of your dog and not their weight. We opted for the Medium for our Malinois but there was still a bit of adjustment with the straps for it to fit properly.

It was easy to put on (once your dog co-operates!) as it slides over the head and then you simply snap it under the belly.
The one issue we encountered is that the backpack tended to slide forward when Aramis bent down so we may end up sewing the straps in place once adjusted.

The EzyDog Summit Backpack is available in 4 sizes: Small, Medium, Large and X-Large.

Aussie Dog Products - Buddy Ball Review

The Buddy Ball range is the latest in interactive dog toys by Aussie Dog Products. Like all their toys, these are designed to be tough and they also come in a range of sizes to cater for all our best friends!

Dogs don’t need to eat out of a food bowl and studies have shown that when given food enrichment toys or boredom busters, dogs are not only more active but also less likely to bark!

By providing ongoing mental stimulation, enrichment toys have been shown to also slow down our dogs’ cognitive decline due to age.
Most pet dogs are left alone during the day so they get bored and crave stimulation!

Our own dogs will quickly get tired of any particular toy – no matter how much they loved it initially - so we are always on the search for variety to offer them new challenges and this means rotating their toys often!

BUDDY BALL FEATURES

The Aussie Dog Buddy Ball is more like a rolling restaurant than a treat ball! The unique design of its opening allows for all sorts of treats and goodies to be stuffed in to it
like bones, carrots, jerky, liver treats etc. The only limitation is your imagination!

It changes treat time to challenge time and will keep your dog entertained even after the ball has been emptied of its contents.
Made from food grade materials, your dogs will love the soft feel of this toy on their gums and the built-in chicken flavour!

The Buddy Ball comes in 3 sizes: Small (for dogs: 0-5kg), Medium (for dogs: 5-20kg) and Large (for dogs: 20kg+).

Whilst being super tough, the Buddy Ball is not designed to be left with your dog long-term so after play, always put it away.

WHAT WE LIKE

It is a challenge to find toys that will survive the assaults of our Malinois’ jaws and it is usually more a matter of hours rather than days before a toy has to be “retired”.

The plastic used in the manufacturing of the Buddy Ball is flexible enough to allow for chewing - to extract the last treats which haven’t fallen out by rolling it around – without causing any damage or leaving any teeth marks so they should have many more hours of play ahead…

The trick consists in finding the perfect size treat for each Buddy Ball as the hole size is different. We found pieces of liver treats worked best in the smallest ball whilst the larger one suited roo strips, a chicken wing or similar (you can even get crocodiles bones these days!).

Surprisingly our dogs favoured the smaller sized Buddy Balls - though not designed for them - and had lots of fun taking turns pushing them around with their noses to get all the treats out!

We found the Buddy Ball very easy to keep clean with a quick rinse under the tap after our dogs finished playing in the yard and the occasional soak in the sink after using wet/raw food.
