Training a Labradoodle to Go Up & Down Stairs

Training a Labradoodle to Go Up & Down Stairs

Training a Labradoodle to Go Up & Down Stairs

In the world of designer dog breeds, the Labradoodle is a popular choice. This family-friendly companion dog combines the best characteristics of the Labrador retriever and the standard poodle. A medium to large dog, the Labradoodle is friendly, energetic and intelligent, making it easily trainable. Training a Labradoodle to go up and down stairs is important. For puppies, stair training decreases the chance of injury, and for adult dogs, stair training helps for those that have never encountered stairs or have a fear of them.

Early Exposure

For Labradoodle puppies, early exposure is key to training on the stairs. You want your puppy to be familiar and gain the experience necessary to navigate the stairs. Introduce your Labradoodle puppy to the stairs starting at 16 weeks old. However, training a Labradoodle to go up and down stairs can occur at any age. If you're adopting an adult dog that has never had an experience with stairs or one that has fear or anxiety over stairs, training is still possible. Expose your Labradoodle to stairs as soon as possible to increase positive associations.

Warnings

While early stair exposure is recommended for Labradoodles, you dont want to introduce young puppies to stairs too early. Puppies shouldn't be allowed to go up and down stairs before 16 weeks, as their muscles, joints and bones are still developing, and injuries can occur. If your Labradoodle puppy is under one year, never leave it to navigate or play on the stairs alone. Accidents and injuries, such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysfunction, can occur if the dog is allowed to run up and down stairs or play near stairs without supervision.

Methods

To train your Labradoodle to go up and down the stairs, build a positive association. Turn stair training into a game with treats and rewards. Verbal praise and positive reinforcement are highly recommended for successful training. Start at the bottom of the stairs and train your Labradoodle to climb up the stairs before climbing down. Work with one step, using a treat to coax the dog to climb the step. Gradually and slowly build your Labradoodles confidence, working with one step at a time and slowly adding more steps. When your dog feels confident going up the stairs, use treats to teach your Labradoodle to go down the stairs.

Considerations

Remember that training your Labradoodle to go up and down the stairs is a form of exercise. Due to the high-energy nature of the Labradoodle, consider other exercise that the dog is getting throughout the day, in addition to stair training. This will prevent you from overexercising your Labradoodle. "...Lots of individuals assume that it can be essential to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. Some people could find this interesting but a lot of people can agree that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they might give up their pets in order to reestablish their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they need to take care of and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These suggestions could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to execute suitable dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... If your dog has trouble going up and down stairs, always consult your veterinarian to rule out any medical problems. If you rule out medical conditions but your dog still has problems navigating the steps, anxiety may be the cause. Never rush your dog into stair training, as this can produce further anxiety. It may take a few weeks for your dog to become comfortable. Positive encouragement and reinforcement will encourage advancement in training.

How to Train a Mini Doberman Pinscher

How to Train a Mini Doberman Pinscher

How to Train a Mini Doberman Pinscher

The mini Doberman pinscher is a petite breed of dog that originated in Germany. While they look like normal Dobermans, mini pinschers are actually a different breed. Though they are diminutive in size, these dogs are often known for their courage and fearlessness. With the proper understanding and training, most mini pinschers can be taught to behave appropriately. Following are five guidelines that should make it possible to produce a playful and loving canine companion.

Instructions

    1

Be assertive when training and modifying the behavior of mini pinschers. This breed often behaves stubbornly and will try to dominate anyone or anything in its path. That's why it's so important to stand your ground and act assertively throughout this process. In the long run, acting assertively should win you the respect of your dog and encourage acceptable behavior.

    2

Start socializing your dog as soon as possible. This can be done by taking it for walks in public places like a park or around your neighborhood. Keep the dog on a leash, but allow it to meet and interact with other dogs. Socializing a mini pinscher at young age should hopefully lead to well-adjusted behavior later on.

    3

Use newspapers to designate a potty area during the housebreaking phase. Point this area out as a place to go potty until your dog has figured it out. It's usually best to designate a bathroom for this area. Then, gradually move the newspaper closer to the front door. In time, your dog should associate the front door with going potty. This means that he can alert you when he needs to go potty by going to the front door.

    4

Use lots of praise whenever your mini pinscher engages in acceptable behavior. This can be in the form of petting or some healthy treats. Try not to spoil your dog in the process; just use consistent praise. Spoiling a mini pinscher can sometimes lead to it taking advantage of you. On the other end of the spectrum, it's important to never physically punish a dog by hitting it with anything. This only creates fear, which can lead to even worse behavior.

    5

Play with your dog on a consistent basis. This breed is naturally energetic and needs to burn off that energy in a positive way. Activities like taking walks and throwing a ball usually work well as an outlet. Doing so should reduce boredom and create an affectionate bond between you and your dog. Not providing enough stimulation for a mini pinscher sometimes leads to destructive behavior like chewing on shoes or furniture.

The Best Ways to Housebreak a Mini Schnauzer

The Best Ways to Housebreak a Mini Schnauzer

The Best Ways to Housebreak a Mini Schnauzer

How to housebreak your mini schnauzer depends on whether the dog is adult or a puppy. A puppy is too young to have developed bad habits and so will be easier to housebreak. An older dog will take more time and patience, as well as strong leadership on your part and, possibly, a behavior modification tool.

Housebreaking a Mini Schnauzer Puppy

The most important tool for housebreaking a puppy is a crate. Using a crate is not cruel, as some people think; dogs are den animals, and being in a crate simulates the den experience. Be sure you allow the puppy to develop a positive association with the crate, however, by putting toys in the crate, padding the crate with a comfortable dog bed, and never forcing the puppy to go in. Likewise, never put the puppy in the crate as a punishment.

Keep your puppy on a schedule. A puppy should be able to hold its bladder for as many hours as it is months-old plus one. In other words, a two-month-old puppy should be able to hold its bladder for three hours, and so it should be taken out every three hours and not left in its crate longer than that.

Housebreaking an Adult Dog

If your dog is an adult and has started using the bathroom inside, first attempt to find out why. If you are taking the dog out when it needs to go, and still it goes inside, look for other possible signs of illness: change in the consistency of stools, vomiting or lack of appetite, for example. If you notice any of these symptoms, take your dog to the vet.

If your dog is not sick, look at your relationship with the dog. Is this dog new? If so, was it house trained before coming to live with you? Are you the clear leader, or is your dog in charge? If the dog growls at you for any reason, it thinks it's the leader. If you don't make the dog work for anything, but give it whatever it wants -- attention, treats, play -- it thinks it's above you in the pack hierarchy and may decide that the bathroom is wherever it wants. In this case, you must exercise leadership skills. Make the dog work for everything: sit and stay, until released, before meals; sit before getting a treat; wait until invited before jumping up on the couch; virtually, perform a task before getting anything it wants. Dog trainers call this policy, "Never give a dog anything for free," and recommend it for all dogs.

Until your adult mini schnauzer is housebroken, consider using a doggie diaper to prevent accidents.

Put It on Command

Whether a puppy or adult, your mini schnauzer can respond to a verbal command to use the bathroom. First, establish a general area where you want the dog to urinate or defecate. Take the dog there every time you take it out; wait until just before the dog starts to go and say, "Potty!" Praise the dog excessively as it goes and after it's finished.

Never Punish for Mistakes

If your mini schnauzer has an accident, never punish the dog, whether you see it happen or find a mess later. First of all, you should not have this problem with a puppy, because the puppy will be securely crated; unless you are supervising it. However, mistakes sometimes happen; but remember that if your puppy uses the bathroom inside, the mistake is yours for not paying attention. If the puppy whines, acts restless, or starts sniffing about, take it out immediately. Otherwise, take it out on schedule. A puppy is considered housebroken if it can go several days without having an accident.

You leave home for work and come home to find your dog used the bathroom in the house. You yell at the dog and even push its nose in the mess, a cruel and useless punishment. You come home on another day to find an accident and notice that the dog looks guilty the instant you walk in the door. You therefore conclude -- wrongly -- that he knows better. In fact, the dog now associates your coming home with being punished. The so-called guilt is in fact the dog trying to act submissive in order to appease you. Studies by animal behaviorists have proven that dogs do not "know better" and do not have a guilty conscience. Unlike humans, they have no moral code.

If your dog does have an accident, calmly put the dog out or in another room and then clean up.
