Dogs NSW is the peak body in New South Wales responsible for promoting breeding, showing, trialling, obedience, and other canine-related activities and the ownership of temperamentally and physically sound purebred dogs across the state.
The Hound Club of NSW’s 100th Championship Show celebrates more than half a century of showing Hound breeds, such as Pharaoh Hounds, Greyhounds, Beagles, Norwegian Elkhounds, Afghan Hounds, Dachshunds and many others, said Rebecca Rafton, Vice President of the Hound Club of NSW.
“The Hound Club of NSW holds two shows a year (Easter and October). Its first show was held in March 1964 with an entry of 256 dogs from across all the breeds in the Hound group from around NSW and is today one of the biggest Hound festivals in Australia!” she said.
The Opening of the Ceremony will be held at 10am by a town crier, announcing 5 show rings, the international judges as well as the champagne and nibbles at each ring. Completion of judging (approx. 12:30pm) will be followed by the prestigious Hound of the Year competition - entries by invitation only - and then the cutting of the cake!

Lure Coursing – the great chase!
This year, the Hound Club of NSW’s 100th Championship Show is held in conjunction with the NSW Lure Coursing Association – 3 days (Sept 30 – Oct 2) of lure coursing events awarded by an international panel of specialist judges. Lure Coursing is a dog sport that involves chasing a mechanically operated lure.
The Lure Coursing trials will comprise of two streams of dogs participating – Sighthound stream (i.e. Afghan Hounds, Salukis and Whippets) and Coursing Ability Test stream (for the rest of the breeds and associated dogs). Besides prizes for top three winners of these streams, a prize will also be awarded for ‘High in Trial’ every day for the top scoring dog in the whole trial, explained Rafton.
“In addition, dogs of the Sighthound breeds gain points for winning a place in their breed class and will be awarded first place in their breeds in recognition of their performance at the breed level,” she said.
